Mathura (City)

Mathura is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, located in north-central India. It is the country's most important historical and cultural centre.

Mathura's history extends back to ancient times. It is thought to have been inhabited from at least the sixth century BCE, and it is mentioned in several ancient books such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to Hindu mythology, it is claimed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, a Hindu god. Mathura is also thought to be the location of Lord Buddha's first discourse.

Mathura was a prosperous metropolis and an important centre of trade and commerce throughout the ancient period. It was an important centre of the Mauryan Empire and, later, the Hindu Empire.

The city thrived under the patronage of several dynasties, including the Guptas, Rajputs, and Mughals.

Mathura reached its zenith during the Kushan Empire's reign in the first century CE. It grew into a prominent centre for art and culture, witnessing the emergence of the Mathura school of art, recognised for its particular sculpting style. The city was also recognised for its Lord Krishna-related religious and pilgrimage attractions, which drew people from all around India.

Later, Mathura was ruled by many Muslim kingdoms, notably the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals. During his reign, Emperor Akbar directed the construction of various mosques and monuments. The city was exposed to multiple assaults, as well as damage and pillage.

Mathura became a part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after India's independence in 1947. Since then, the city has grown fast and is now a prominent pilgrimage destination as well as a popular tourist destination, receiving thousands of tourists each year. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, which is claimed to mark Lord Krishna's birthplace, is a prominent holy landmark in Mathura. Govardhan Hill

Hindus travel in large numbers to Govardhan Hill, which is situated in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district. Hindu mythology regards it as one of the holiest sites, and Lord Krishna is said to have lifted the hill on his little finger to shield the inhabitants of Vrindavan from flooding and heavy rains. The hill is built of red sandstone and is also known as Giriraj. A parikrama (circumambulation) of the hill is thought to be beneficial spiritually. Every day, thousands of followers come to the hill to worship and pray.

Dwarkadhish Temple

In Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India, there is a Hindu temple called the Dwarkadhish Temple. One of the most significant places of pilgrimage for followers of Lord Krishna is the temple, which is devoted to him and is also known by the name Dwarkadhish.

Rich Marwari trader Seth Gokul Das Parikh constructed the temple in 1814. The temple's design combines Mughal and Rajasthani elements. The idol of Lord Krishna, as well as those of Radha, Balarama, and other gods, are kept in the temple's main sanctum.

The temple draws a lot of visitors all throughout the year, but especially around Mathura's fervently observed Janmashtami festival. Additionally, there are smaller shrines within the temple complex.

Prem Mandir
